Saudi Arabia’s Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) is about to make life much easier for Saudi citizens. The CITC announced the signing of a commercial agreement between the three largest telecoms operators in the country — STC, Mobily, and Zain — to launch a free local roaming service.
The agreement will allow users to change their service operator to another service network at no extra cost (that’s quite a free upgrade). This deal is a turning point for rural areas where coverage for a primary service operator is not always guaranteed. By the end of the year, the local roaming service will cover 21,000 villages. This expansion will allow the coverage of STC, Mobily, and Zain to increase by at least 100% from its existing state.
why it matters
CITC's commitment is part of Saudi Vision 2030's digitization of the economy. Increasing mobile and internet penetration across the entire country is an essential component to achieve this objective.
