Orascom to build 1,000km rail system in Egypt

People in Egypt will soon be able to travel around more quickly and easily than ever before thanks to a 1,000km high-speed rail transportation system that is set to be built by Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels in partnership with Orascom Construction (MONORAIL) and Siemens Mobility. The $3b project was announced over the weekend.

In addition to reducing travel time for millions of Egyptians, the rail line will also be used for freight transportation.

The rail line will connect the city of El-Alamein on the Mediterranean coastline with the city of Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea. In between, the line will also pass through New Cairo City, the country’s administrative capital.

why it matters
Orascom Construction’s CEO, Osama Bishai, stressed the economic impact the high-speed rail system will have, stating “this project will connect distant parts of Egypt in a sustainable manner while contributing to the infrastructure and economic development of the country.”
