Jessica Alba: actress, model, entrepreneur-who-took-a-business-from-startup-to-IPO

Jessica Alba’s The Honest Company has plans to go public. On Friday, reports leaked that the baby and beauty products company will confidentially file for an initial public offering with the SEC as soon as Friday.

Former actress Jessica Alba co-founded The Honest Company in 2012 with a mission to provide consumers with ethically sourced and produced household goods like diapers, moisturizer, shampoo, and makeup. Like a true California resident, Alba was certainly ahead of the sustainability trend. Her company successfully raised over $500m in funding and grew to more than 32,000 retail locations since.

Sources said the company previously explored a sale that valued it at $1b but could seek a valuation of about $2b in its IPO. Who would’ve thought one of the Fantastic Four would be taking a $2b company public?

why it matters
The Honest Company has grown with help from serious private equity investors like L Catterton and is an example of how "star power" can help catapult a startup's scalability. But, can public investors show celebrity-founded businesses the same love that a close group of private investors can?
