Discovery wins some, and loses some

There will be no “Home Work” from now on… the show was removed by Magnolia Network two days after Discovery+ launched it. It starred a Utah couple, following their renovation of a school into their family home and other people's houses. The removal was preceded by some startling discoveries — homeowners featured on the series alleged that the couple damaged their homes and exceeded the budget. Oops.

Discovery Inc (DISCA) owns the streaming service Discovery+ and features real-life entertainment from different TV channels. Despite this minor blow, Discovery is only eyeing the prize. It's bought a 10% stake in OpenAP, an ad-targeting group found in 2017. OpenAP is also owned by hotshots like ViacomCBS (VIAC), Fox (FOXA), and NBCUniversal (UVV), and develops tools for specific ads across multiple TV networks.

Why it matters

Discovery seems to have joined the club of TV networks diversifying their offerings to stay relevant. This time it's an ad maximizing tool — who knows what'll be next.
