YouTube wants to Marie Kondo its platform’s podcasts

Calling all business minded podcast lovers, YouTube is now recruiting for a podcast executive role. The lucky winner will be tasked with organizing and managing the millions of podcasts on the platform.

YouTube was never intended to be a podcast platform, but the Google-owned (GOOG) online video giant has nevertheless found itself a de facto repository for both podcasts and vodcasts (video podcasts). The status has gotten Google into competition with other podcast streamers like Spotify (SPOT) and Apple Music (AAPL). Spotify has spent billions to acquire smaller podcast platforms while Apple and even Amazon (AMZN) are starting to invest more and more resources into podcasts.

Why it matters

Podcasting has yet to become a major revenue source for YouTube. Last year, the podcast business only contributed $1b out of YouTube’s $20b in total advertising sales.
