The Surface event is a wrap

Apple (APPL) came out with its new toys last week, and now Microsoft (MSFT) is hot on its heels with a product launch just two days ago. There’s five new flagship Microsoft Surface products out, and each one is more exciting than the last.

In the laptop-slash-tablets category, Microsoft came out with everything from a new 14.4 inch touchscreen laptop (the Surface Laptop Studio) to the latest Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 8, and Surface Go 3. There’s also an update in the company’s new hand-held productivity device, the Surface Duo 2 (which Microsoft is now marketing more as a phone than a small tablet). Accessory upgrades for all the Surfaces include a new stylus (Surface Slim Pen 2), an eco-friendly mouse, and a ‘kit’ with small add-ons to help people with low vision and limited motor skills better navigate Surface devices. The Surface Laptop Studio and Surface Pro 8 are set to run on Intel’s (INTC) latest 11th-gen chips, while the Surface Pro X is housing the company’s own custom processor.

Why it matters

While only 4% of Microsoft’s Q2 2021 revenues came from its hardware line-up, they are still an efficient way for the company to silently market its software upgrades. Almost each new product demo was seen to be sporting the latest Windows 11. The stock was up by a modest 0.3% yesterday.
