Our third acquisition story for the day, and this time it’s marriage! Panasonic acquires Blue Yonder

Panasonic is buying American AI firm Blue Yonder for an astounding $6.5b. Their relationship started as a joint venture back in 2019, before things got more serious last year as Panasonic committed to 20% of Blue Yonder’s shares.

Things must have gone well for the pair since as they’re now ready to tie the knot. Through the partnership, Panasonic looks to combine “software, sensors and other devices” for efficiency gains, and Blue Yonder is its perfect match as it provides task management solutions for warehouse operations built on machine learning technology.

why it matters
Supply chain software has seen growing demand in recent years as companies try to become less hardware-dependent. Germany’s Siemens also made similar moves recently by buying companies that provide software services that allow for higher profitability at the factory management level.
