Move over, Zoom, Microsoft is taking over the future of virtual meetings

Microsoft (MSFT) has announced a new platform called Microsoft Mesh that will be the Teams of the future! Mesh will allow users to “teleport” to a meeting room as a hologram to interact with each other as if they were all in the same physical location. Seriously, why would anyone ever have to leave their house ever again?!

A year into the pandemic, many people who have had to switch from going to the office to spending hours on video calls are suffering from a phenomenon dubbed “Zoom fatigue”. Enter Mesh to the rescue!

Although, the fact that it works best on devices that support augmented/ virtual reality (which tend to be pricey) can be a rather big obstacle for many. Microsoft’s shares were trading nearly 3% lower on Wednesday.

why it matters
The tech giant’s “mixed reality” announcement offers a glimpse into what work environments can look like in the not-so-long-term. If virtual reality is able to successfully replace business travel altogether, companies that operate in the industry (for instance, Spatial) are bound to succeed.
