Google putting a ban on climate change doubters

Google (GOOG) is putting its foot down on climate deniers. Last week, the tech giant announced it will be prohibiting ads and the monetization of videos on its subsidiary YouTube that deny climate change and what it’s calling a “well-established scientific consensus.”

Using a combination of automated tools and real human reviewers, Google will begin enforcing the new restrictions next month. According to Google, the move was inspired by a “growing number of our advertising and publisher partners who have expressed concerns about ads that run alongside or promote inaccurate claims about climate change.”

Content that refers to climate change as a hoax, denies data that shows the long-term warming trend of the Earth, and disputes the idea that human activity is playing a role in this will be specifically targeted.

Why it matters

YouTube has been under pressure to stamp out "fake news" for years now. Last week, the platform also banned content that promoted false claims and conspiracies around Covid-19 vaccines.
