Disney+ now has 100m paying subscribers!

Congrats are in line for the folks at Disney (DIS), who just crossed a major streaming milestone by racking in over 100 million paying subscribers on its Disney+ platform. Moreover, the impressive number of global subscribers was achieved in just 16 months — guess Buzz Lightyear was right when he said “to infinity and beyond!”

The entertainment giant is clearly trying to get the show going again in an attempt to cushion the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. Not only is Disney aiming to finally re-open its California theme parks in late April (with limited capacity, of course), it is also hopeful that it can send its popular cruise ships back to the waters in the fall.

Walt Disney Co’s shares hit a record high of $203 on Monday.

why it matters
Many of Disney’s businesses were hit pretty hard by Covid-19, including movie theaters and theme parks. On the other hand, Disney+ (much like its rivals in the streaming industry) actually benefitted from stay-at-home orders, providing the parent company with a much-needed financial buoy.
