Beyond Meat and Taco Bell embrace Veganuary

Beyond Meat (BYND) investors are savoring the news of Taco Bell’s decision to use its meat substitute in the development of vegetarian-friendly menu items. Don’t worry, we’re confused too. Doesn’t Taco Bell already use fake meat?

Taco Bell, a subsidiary of Yum! Brands (YUM), has long considered itself a leader in the fast-food vegetarian space and sees incorporating plant-based meat substitutes as an important step in creating “more meatless options in store that vegetarians, veggie-curious and even meat-eaters will love.”

Keep an eye out next time you make a late-night Taco Bell run, as the new menu items are due to be tested within the year. Burrito, anyone?

why it matters
Shares of BYND soared more than 7% on the news and maintained most of the gain during Friday’s trading session. The price of BYND stock is very sensitive to any news (positive or negative) of partnerships with big food brands - because it's all about the demand for its faux meat. Last November, BYND fell hard after McDonald's (MCD) failed to make any mention of the company in their announcement of the McPlant, a plant-based patty.
