Amazon unionizes

Almost 6,000 Amazon (AMZN) employees at a warehouse in Alabama are voting on whether to unionize or not.

Historically, formal labor unions are not common in the tech industry since companies in this space have their own unique work culture (you won’t find hoodies and baristas at the post office).

But, since Amazon employees’ workload has massively increased during the pandemic, as people turned to online shopping more than ever, change is coming! A union will elevate Amazon workers’ voices and give them the opportunity to have a say in their labor rights and corporate transparency.

why it matters
Google’s parent company recently saw thousands of its staff sign up for the Alphabet Workers Union. If the Alabama vote is successful, it will set a precedent for Amazon, and it will likely lead to similar workers’ rights movements across the industry.
