We knew Mark Zuckerberg has been excited about the metaverse lately, but we didn’t know he’d take it this far. Last Thursday, Zuckerberg announced his plan to rebrand and restructure Facebook (FB) under a parent company dubbed “Meta”.
The signature names and logos for the WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook apps aren’t expected to change, but the company’s stock will change its ticker symbol to MVRS starting December 1st.
Not even Zuckerberg himself is totally sure what the metaverse will be or look like, but during last week’s announcement he gave us further insight into his vision for an immersive virtual world where "you're going to be able to do almost anything you can imagine." More specifically, he talked about how the metaverse will provide a platform where users can do things like gather for virtual meetings, play games, attend virtual concerts, and exercise.
Why it matters
Facebook's rebranding and restructuring goes to show just how serious Zuckerberg is about his vision for the company's future. Back in July, he stated that over the next five years, "we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company."
